The Probus name is an abbreviation for professional and businesswomen (and men) and has its roots here in the UK. Formed to bring together retired or semi-retired gentlemen and ladies of similar backgrounds and interests, Probus Clubs offer an opportunity to socialize, engage in organized outings and to attend talks on a variety of subjects.
Each Probus Club is an autonomous organization, structured simply, cheaply and with minimal bureaucracy, the emphasis being on creating a friendly environment where ladies can enjoy the fellowship of friends and like-minded individuals.
About Us
While the initial focus of Probus was to attract strictly professional and business retirees, the concept has since widened within many UK clubs to be more inclusive. Congleton Ladies 2 is one of those clubs, and welcomes all ladies from the town and its Borough, regardless of their career or background.
We meet once a month, every second Thursday, at the Lion & Swan Hotel on Swan Bank. We meet at 10am for a coffee and a chat, then at 10.30am the President outlines the Club’s business and diary for the month. After the formalities are done, a guest speaker gives a presentation on a variety of subjects, ranging from anecdotal experiences of nursing in the 40s and 50s to the beginnings of interspace communications.
Aside from the monthly get-together, members are invited to attend outings to notable and historical sites, share tea at the opera, or just to meet for a friendly lunch. Membership currently costs £25 per year, plus an optional, one-off fee of less than £5 for a name badge.
If you are interested in joining as a guest or a member, please contact the Secretary.
