Welcome to the Probus Club of Eastbourne which was founded in 1974 for retired and semi-retired professionals and businessmen in the Eastbourne area of East Sussex for social and leisure purposes.
Retirement can come too early for many people who want and are able to remain active. Probus clubs are organisations for men (and women) who have retired from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests.
The Probus club movement was formed in the United Kingdom in 1965 and in its beginning there were two clubs, both created by members of Rotary Clubs, these being Welwyn Garden City and Caterham. The movement expanded into New Zealand, Australia and Canada in the early 1970’s and has since spread to other parts of Europe, Asia, South Africa and America. By 2014 there were around 2000 clubs in the UK alone.
Each Probus Club is autonomous. Clubs endeavour to be simple in structure, be free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs, and involve members in minimal cost. Clubs are directed primarily to providing fellowship between members and the opportunity for development of acquaintance.
About Us
This friendly Probus Club is for like-minded men, out of the world of Business and Professions, who would like to meet twice a month, once for a relaxed lunch/meeting and once for a coffee morning/meeting.
If you are interested, and would like to apply for membership, please contact our club secretary with a view to inviting you to one of our regular meetings.
The joining fee is currently £20 which covers the provision of tie and badges and is abated appropriately if new members already possess these items. The annual subscription is also currently £25.
Meetings
The Probus Club of Eastbourne holds its meetings at The Cumberland Hotel, Devonshire Place on the first Tuesday (Lunch) and the third Tuesday (Coffee Morning) of each month.
On the first Tuesday of the month members arrive from 12.30pm for drinks in the hotel lounge before transferring to the Coniston Room or the Main Dining Room to take a three course lunch, which is served at 13.00pm.
On the third Tuesday of the month members arrive from 10.00am for coffee/tea in The Cumberland Suite, followed by a talk delivered at 10.30am usually by either an external speaker or one of our own members.
Currently the cost of attending the meeting and the three course lunch is £20. The cost of attending the coffee morning is £2.
Partners and widows of past members are invited to attend the December Christmas Lunch meeting within the Main Dining Room. Ladies are also welcome to meet up with other ladies for coffee and/or lunch within The Coniston Room at The Cumberland Hotel on either of the regular meeting dates.
The AGM is convened at the May meeting.
Events
Apart from regular monthly meetings the club organises various social events, which include trips to places of interest, theatres, etc. Some are day trips by coach or by car, others are short breaks further afield in the UK or continental Europe. Member’s wives, partners, widows of past members and friends are invited to join us for holidays and other trips and social occasions. Please note that some of the trips that are on offer may not have been organised by Probus directly. In these circumstances you should be aware that any incidents that occur, including any financial aspects, are not covered by the Club’s insurance.
